New malware changes the proxy settings of infected computers

Security experts from Microsoft have found a new method of attack by hackers, through which they can gain access to foreign computers. Macros embedded in Word documents are used. This is nothing special in itself, but the new malware uses this method to set up a proxy on the infected PC.

As our colleagues from Semper Video further report, the malware remains almost unnoticed by the user. Hackers can nevertheless access data transmitted via the Internet as they wish, since they first take a detour via a proxy – which is of course controlled by the attackers.

Since no administrator rights are required for the necessary changes to the system, they can be made largely unnoticed. Many virus scanners could also have problems recognizing the attack.

Further details on the attack method can be found in the corresponding entry in Microsoft’s TechNet blog.
